Mani demands immediate nod for new dam at Mullaperiyar

At a news conference here, he said Kerala Congress had withdrawn from the Mullaperiyar agitation taking into account the Prime Minister’s appeal to withdraw the agitation to create a favourable atmosphere for his intervention.

In the wake of this appeal, the Kerala Congress had withdrawn from the agitation, he said and expressed concern over the delay in finding a solution for the issue. For the construction of a new dam, Rs five crore had been earmarked in the budget.

State Government was committed to constructing the new dam as it was a declared programme of the government.

Since there was only 50 hectare of forest between the present dam and proposed dam, the Centre could give immediate sanction for the new dam, he said.

Mr Mani appealed to the Chief Minister to send a delegation, if necessary, to Delhi to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and obtain clearance for the new dam.

He appealed to the Prime Minister to take effective steps for the new dam as it was a matter concerning the safety of the state.

Kerala Congress (M) had given permission to the Idukki District Committee to chalk out future course of action with the cooperation of the Mullaperiyar Action Council, he said.

State Committee of the Kerala Congress (M) would meet here on February 26. Mullaperiyar issue would be the main agenda of the meeting, he said. (UNI)
