Tourism facility work at Thekkady to resume

Tourism infrastructure constructions at boat landing station, Thekkady received a shot in the arm with the Chennai Bench of the Green Tribunal vacating the stay recently.

The Forest Department had started the construction work on a cafeteria, resting place and outlet for selling environmental-friendly items at the boat-landing station which were stayed by the tribunal as part of an order staying the construction of a parking ground at Anavachal, the entrance to Thekkady.

A senior official of the Periyar Tiger Reserve on Sunday said that the tribunal has allowed all the eco-friendly constructions approved by the National Tiger Conservation Authority of India.

In its order on May 30, the tribunal also sought an amicable solution to the parking ground issue with Tamil Nadu. In the case moved by two persons against the construction at boat landing station, Tamil Nadu had also impleaded itself in the case that the parking ground under construction at Anavachal was on land owned by the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department as part of the lease agreement on the Mullaperiyar dam.

The tribunal had ordered for immediate stay on all the construction. The PTR pleaded before the tribunal that a delay in final decision on the case had resulted in stopping the eco-friendly construction work causing inconvenience to the tourists and also damaging the environment. The official said that though the construction of the parking ground would not be taken up immediately, the infrastructure building works at boat-landing station would start soon.
